As an amateur photographer, it’s important to practice taking pictures of people, animals and other subjects in motions. This is not exactly an easy thing to do. However, there are some techniques that you need to get familiar with on how to take pictures of moving subjects. So take out your digital camera, head on to one of the busier streets in town, and get down to practicing your photography skills.

Secret #1

The amount of light is very important when you are shooting moving subjects therefore use the flash whenever possible; turning the flash on sometimes results in the camera having to select a higher shutter speed which in turn freezes action much better. Take note, however, that the flash will only be effective at a range of eight feet. Shoot in as much daylight as possible since this will help you achieve better images.

Secret #2

If your camera doesn’t automatically select a higher setting for shutter speed, then you have to do this manually. Keep in mind that the essence of freezing motion is in the reduction of the amount of time that the shutter is open; hence, the faster the shutter speed, the better for your moving shots.

Secret #3

One technique that you should master on how to take pictures of moving subjects is photo panning. This is one of the most effective methods of taking shots when you have a subject in motion; however, it is also one which needs a lot of practice. The fundamental concept behind this method is to pan your camera in time with your moving subject. The result is a sharp subject on an indistinct background. This technique is most useful in shooting fast moving subjects such as participants in a car race or a sports event.

Secret #4

In some lower-end and slightly outdated models, there is such a thing known as shutter lag. Shutter lag is the time it takes for your camera to focus and calculate the exposure after squeezing the shutter button before capturing the shot. The trick then is to half press the shutter button, allowing the camera to pre-focus, pre-calculate, and lock in on your settings. Once the action begins, you can press the button all the way down.

Secret #5

If you don’t really need to get a close up of your subject then by all means, zoom out. One, it will help you achieve shutter speed and two, depending on the model, zooming out will permit more light into your camera.

Light and shutter speed are essential if you want to learn how to take pictures of moving subjects. Nevertheless, you are still too many clicks away from being a full-pledged photographer but regular practice will take you there sooner.
